Why Marble? The Case for Natural Stone
In the last 10 years, the countertop industry hasn’t seen many good-looking options, such as engineered quartz, porcelain, and sintered stone. Some of them can get a very close approximation to the look of marble. But they just can’t do it as deep as it is. Choose a slab of Calacatta Gold or Statuario and feel it, and you’ll know the difference between a stone that’s been around for millions of years and a stone that was prepared in a factory.
The veining on the marble is not printed. It is not computer-controlled. It is the physical evidence of the migration of minerals in metamorphic stone.. There’s a time when everything can seem like something other than what it is, but when you have the real thing, it means something..
Marble vs. Quartzite: A Closer Look
This is a fair comparison. Marble is a material that is often advised against in kitchens, but sometimes it’s not! But context matters. Knowing the difference between marble and quartzite can assist you in choosing the one that you will want.
Feature | Marble | Quartzite |
| Hardness | 3 to 4 Mohs | 7 to 8 Mohs |
| Scratch Resistance | Low: scratches with use | Excellent |
| Acid Sensitivity | High: etches on contact | Resistant to mild acids |
| Stain Resistance | Moderate (requires sealing) | High (when sealed) |
| Visual Character | Unmatched: the original aesthetic | White varieties closely mimic marble |
| Patina Over Time | Develops character, etching, and patina | Ages gracefully with minimal wear |
| Heat Resistance | Moderate: use trivets | Excellent |
| Best For | Bathrooms, low-traffic areas, statement pieces | Kitchens, heavy-use countertops |
Quartzite is another option that’s more likely to withstand daily use and acidic foods, and is a better choice for high-traffic kitchens where red wine is just as much a part of life as the food. At NaturaStone Design, we work each day with both of these materials and can assist you in deciding what might be appropriate for your project.
Marble vs. Quartz: What’s the Difference?
Homeowners often have a hard time distinguishing between marble and quartz countertops.
Marble is a natural stone: it is quarried from the earth, cut into slabs, and installed without being modified. Engineered Quartz, also known as quartz or quartz countertops (such as Caesarstone, Cambria, Silestone, and others), is a product that is formed from about 90 to 95% ground quartz crystals fused together with polymer resin and pigment.
Feature | Marble (Natural) | Quartz (Engineered) |
| Origin | Mined from the earth | Factory-manufactured |
| Porosity | Porous: requires sealing | Non-porous: no sealing needed |
| Heat Resistance | Moderate | Moderate: resins can discolor |
| Scratch Resistance | 3 to 4 Mohs, scratches with use | 7 Mohs: significantly harder |
| UV / Outdoor Use | Generally stable | Resins can yellow in UV exposure |
| Pattern Uniqueness | Every slab is one of a kind | Consistent, repeatable patterns |
| Acid Sensitivity | High to etch easily | Resistant |
| Maintenance | Requires sealing; etching possible | Minimal: wipe clean |
| Aesthetic Prestige | The original, incomparable depth | Clean, uniform, predictable |
Engineered Quartz is a low-maintenance surface that will never need sealing and features a consistent color throughout. However, marble is in a class all by itself if you’re looking for a true feeling of warmth for a surface, only brought about by real stone, and the irreplaceable character that time brings. Many homeowners select marble because it’s more about having a surface that is around them daily, rather than a surface that’s just functioning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Every day, we receive queries regarding marble. These are the most frequently asked Orlando homeowner and designer questions.
Is marble a good choice for kitchen countertops?
Marble is certainly a good choice for the kitchen, though with a realistic outlook. It’s easier to be scratched than quartzite or granite, and it will etch if exposed to acid, lemon juice, or tomato sauce. Some people enjoy the “patina” that comes with time on a marble over the years, adding some character to the surface with minor chips and scratches. Others like a gloss that you can see clearly through without any reflection. If you’re a part of the latter group, then quartzite or engineered quartz might be a better option for your kitchen. Marble is a great option for baking stations and kitchens that will not be used for high-acid foods.
Does marble need to be sealed?
Yes. Marble is a porous natural stone and should be sealed at installation and re-sealed every year or so, depending on the use and density of the stone type used. Sealing forms a barrier to prevent staining, but has a limited ability to resist staining from acids. At installation, we use a professional-grade sealer and provide you with a simple routine to maintain your marble in top condition.
What is the difference between Carrara, Calacatta, and Statuario marble?
All three marbles are white, but are very different in their appearance and retail value. It is the most common, has light grey veining, and is the cheapest. The Calacatta is less common and has more prominent veining patterns in the form of dramatic lines and a white, luminous background. Statuario is regarded as one of the finest marbles in the world, is bright and luminous white with sweeping and high-contrast grey or gold veining, and fetches a high price. Both are beautiful in their own way, and it really depends on the look you’re going for and your budget.
Will hot pans damage marble countertops?
Marble is more heat-sensitive than quartzite or granite. Exposure to warm contact is unlikely to be serious, but longer exposure to high temperatures may result in thermal shock or surface finish issues. It’s always suggested to use trivets or heat pads, not to prevent the stone from cracking, but to protect the stone sealer and the polished surface from damage over the years, with just about any countertop material.
How long do marble countertops last?
Some of the world’s long-lasting buildings have been built with marble floors, walls, and surfaces for thousands of years. A home-use marble countertop can last forever if installed properly and cared for. The main thing is to set realistic expectations. With time, marble will acquire a patina that many people believe enhances its beauty and authenticity. When sealed and cleaned using pH-neutral cleaners, a marble surface will be a beautiful and lasting addition to your home.
What are the most popular marble colors and varieties?
Today, there is a wide variety of marbles that are available that most homeowners would not expect. There are a variety of white and grey textured stones, such as Carrara, Calacatta, Statuario, Thassos, and Arabescato. Nero Marquina black with white veining, and Portoro black with gold are dramatic dark varieties. Some of the warmer tones are the Botticino (cream), Emperador (dark brown with fine veining on its surface), and Calacatta Viola (white with purple and gold veining). Every slab is different, so it’s always best to choose it in person at our showroom.
Can marble be used in bathrooms?
The bathroom is indeed where marble really comes into its own, and that’s in many ways. Bathrooms are the perfect setting for marble vanities, shower walls, and flooring because of the reduced amounts of traffic, the exposure to food acids, and the design context. Marble bathrooms are a few of the most stunning residential spaces that we’ve designed at NaturaStone Design. That’s a place where the material’s luminous attribute under both natural and artificial light is truly remarkable.
